Once a fire has been given a chance to grow and generate huge amounts of heat, it becomes almost impossible to stop. How do you stop a fire that is crowning in 20 year old Pines, fanned by a 100 kph wind, flames 50 to 100 meters into the sky with spot fires starting up to 3 kms ahead?
YOU DON’T We have experienced fires that behaved in this manner, the average timber losses per fire was 6,500 hectares. The fires were only stopped with the assistance of a wind and weather change. The only system that can prevent fires from becoming catastrophic, is a system that detects fires immediately they start and then has fire equipment that can attack the fire within 10 minutes of the smoke report.
